The Department of English offers UG program B.A.English and the PG program
M.A. English. B.A was introduced in the year 2010 and M.A.in 2015. With
well-experienced faculty, the Department functions with 15 staff members.
The Department seeks to provide hands-on learning to its students at the
Foundation Level, teaching General English and Soft Skills. It also offers a
Non-major Elective Journalism for other students.
Core Subjects like Technical Writing, Green Studies, Journalism, Translation
Studies, Linguistics and Phonetics are add-on subjects and newly offered
since 2016 by the University of Madras to thrust the students into Knowledge
Economy. The literary, linguistic and oratory skills of the students are
fine tuned to help them excel in taking up challenging and productive
This stream is popular owing to its multidisciplinary approach. Apart from
teaching, other cross stream careers like Copy Editing, Technical Writing,
Proof Reading, Translating, Content Writing, Publishing, Editing are
available in ample scope.
In order to hone their skills, the Department conducts many workshops,
seminars on various facets of acquiring English for employability. Other
activities like problem-solving exercises, project work and skills workshops
are conducted to help comprehend the myriad exposures that a student can
experience while pursuing his/her education in English. Alternative teaching
methods, flipped teaching, blended learning are some parallel modes of
teaching apart from traditional concepts.

I take great pride in penning this address. English is a unique and endearing
language that tugs at every soul with its potency. Its power when unleashed
creates a world in itself. Students pursuing English as a UG or PG subject
are doubly blessed when they take up careers based out of English. Both UG
and PG programs cater to the present needs of society and contributes
greatly to the knowledge Economy.
Our department aims at sensitizing the students to a closer scrutiny of
literary texts in their proper contexts. In doing so, the students are made
aware of the basic principles of literary and cultural studies. Also, the
department takes immense effort to provide career-oriented courses for the
students of all disciplines. Every year value-added certificate courses are
introduced – Calligraphic Writing and Sign Language Training. With the
Language Lab in place, with the State-of-the-art infrastructure, it caters
to Final Year students for placement services and Phonetic Training.
Bridge Course is another training tool that is unique to the Department of
English. Specific and targeted outcome-based learning materials are
especially prepared by the Department for bridging second and tertiary

The outreach programs in collaboration with Mithralaya Foundation from 2017
has been a benchmark of success for the Department. This has instilled in
the students a sense of social responsibility.

The Delany Language Lab is a dedicated space for acquiring linguistic
proficiency, foreign language, and career enhancing training tools.
With 30 student consoles and 1 faculty consoles consisting of audio, video

The language lab consists of two components – Phonetics Lab and Career Lab.
This dual purpose is to help learners of English for their Phonetics Course
in UG and PG, as well as students to acquire Career Enhancement Training.

Bridge Course is an in-house training given to freshman students enrolling
for the UG program. It is basic course covering a 6-day period at the
beginning of the academic year before classes begin for the freshmen
