History
The Department of English offers UG and PG programmes in English. B.A was introduced in the year 2010 and M.A.in 2015. With well-experienced faculty, the Department functions with 15 staff members. The Department seeks to provide hands-on learning to its students at the Foundation Level, teaching General English and Soft Skills. It also offers a Non-major Elective Journalism for other students.
Core Subjects like Technical Writing, Green Studies, Journalism, Translation Studies, Linguistics and Phonetics are add-on subjects and newly offered since 2016 by the University of Madras to thrust the students into Knowledge Economy. The literary, linguistic and oratory skills of the students are fine tuned to help them excel in taking up challenging and productive careers.
This stream is popular owing to its multidisciplinary approach. Apart from teaching, other cross stream careers like Copy Editing, Technical Writing, Proof Reading, Translating, Content Writing, Publishing, and Editing are available in ample scope.
In order to hone student skills, the Department conducts many workshops, seminars on various facets of acquiring English for employability. Other activities like problem-solving exercises, project work and skills workshops are conducted to help comprehend the myriad exposures that a student can experience while pursuing his/her education in English. Alternative teaching methods, flipped teaching, blended learning are some parallel modes of teaching apart from traditional concepts.

Warm Greetings from the Department of English!
Department of English at Patrician College of Arts and Science is located in a sprawling environment with a state-of-the-art infrastructure and highly qualified faculty members. It is one of the largest departments with nearly 250 Undergraduate and Postgraduate students and 14 Faculty members, who are well equipped to make the department as an epitome of excellence.
We constantly strive hard to hone the communicative flair of the students and help them in self- expression. Along with Communicative English and Professional English we impart moral, professional and ethical values to build the overall personality of the students. The number of University ranks produced is a benchmark of the Department’s success in producing focused and career oriented students
Every year, value-added courses like Calligraphy writing, Sign language training, corporate etiquette training courses are introduced to the students to bridge the gap between different phases of academic study and to provide additional professional training and qualifications. Language lab aids student to empower communication through technology. From 2017, the Department of English in association with Mitralaya Foundation engages in various Community outreach activities to influence younger generation to give back to the community and to instill in them the sense of social responsibility.

Language Lab
The Delany Language Lab is a dedicated space for acquiring linguistic proficiency, foreign language, and career enhancing training tools.
With 30 student consoles and 1 faculty console consisting of audio and video materials, the student can make use of these materials and learn at his / her pace.
The language lab consists of two components – Phonetics Lab and Career Lab. This dual purpose is to help learners of English for their Phonetics Course in UG and PG, as well as students to acquire Career Enhancement Training. The recording options help the students to understand in a personal way the nuances that go into English Language Acquisition.
Bridge Course
Bridge Course is an in-house training given to freshers enrolling for the UG program. It is basic course covering a 6-day period at the beginning of the academic year before classes begin for the freshers.
It is basic refresher module to sum up neatly and coherently the aspects that are vital to English Language Acquisition in Higher Education.
The uniqueness of the program is the preparation of the materials by the faculty. This is custom-made tutorial aimed at the specific requirements of students enrolling in Patrician College of Arts and Science.
Objective

Strategy
Every year a new module is framed based on the feedback from students’ response and requirements. The Department discusses key areas and areas of concern while drafting the module. Entry and Exit tests are conducted before and after the programme to assess the level of comprehension.
Outcome
The progression of the students is clearly an indication of the success of the program.
